A portable stove is a cooking stove specially designed to be portable and lightweight, used in camping , picnicking , backpacking , or other use in remote locations where an easily transportable means of cooking or heating is needed. Portable stoves can be used in diverse situations, such as for outdoor food service and catering and in field hospitals. Since the invention of the portable stove in the 19th century, a wide variety of designs and models have seen use in a number of different applications.
Portable stoves can be broken down into several broad categories based on the type of fuel used and stove design: unpressurized stoves that use solid or liquid fuel placed in the burner before ignition; stoves that use a volatile liquid fuel in a pressurized burner; bottled gas stoves; and gravity-fed “spirit” stoves.
Optimus of Sweden manufactures a line of similarly designed stoves in which the stove’s components are entirely enclosed in a folding metal case, the most.

Far North dating Scotland. Objects, Nice stove. The timeline for No.
I never owned the Optimus stove but I used to go backpacking with a similar stove that I can’t recall the make of now but it was round and a bit.
Discussion in ‘ Stove Forum ‘ started by Wim , Feb 11, Log in or Sign up. Classic Camp Stoves. Hi all, I know it is not easy to date Optimus stoves. Other than catalogs there seem to be no other references to go by. Or did Optimus still use “Stockholm” in the stamping at the bottom of the fount after the move? In general, are there any “important” changes to date their stoves? Thanks for any help, all the best, Wim. Wim , Feb 11, Joined: Aug 25, Messages: 9, Hi Wim No question, Optimus used the ‘Stockholm’ reference long after the move.
I initially fell for the reasonable assumption that the acquisition of the Upplands Vasby site offered a dating clue and it doesn’t. Dutchmike offered what I thought was the most logical explanation in the discussion here Dutchmike’s comment in Optimus 5J thread So, the ‘Stockholm’ stamp’s not a guide and it’s down to matching stove details, such as burner design, with components listed in the catalogues to pin the age of the stove down to the nearest decade or so.

Yet another stove I bought. I have used all sorts of stoves, from Primus and Optimus Multi Fuel when I started a 5 year worldwide bicycle trip to an Optimus Svea I tried a gas stove, a self-made hobo stove, an alcohol stove and plain wood fires. Sleep is one of the most important things to enjoy life.
The Primus stove, the first pressurized-burner kerosene (paraffin) stove, was developed in by Frans Wilhelm Lindqvist, a factory mechanic in Stockholm.

The Primus No. A steel top ring on which to set a pot is held above the burner by three support legs. Other Primus-style stoves may be larger or smaller, but have the same basic design. The No. The tank, about 3.
To light the stove, the user pours a small amount of alcohol into a circular “spirit cup” just below the burner and lights it to heat the burner assembly. When it is hot, the user pressurizes the tank by means of a small hand pump integrated into the housing, which forces kerosene from the tank up through the rising tube A and the ascending pipe B to the pre-heated burner head C , where the fuel is heated and vaporized.
The kerosene vapour is then forced under pressure through the descending tube D to the vapor nozzle E ; here it sprays through a jet in the middle of the burner, where it mixes with air and burns in a sootless blue flame. The heat from that flame vaporizes more fuel to sustain the process when the spirit cup burns out.

The flame of gas stoves lights instantly and can be adjusted. Gas cartridges, be it screw-ons or clip-ons, are available at most camping shops worldwide. The 8R has been discontinued. If you’re looking for something new, check out the best liquid fuel stoves for I currently own a number of vintage Optimus and Primus stoves. I have been around them and used them since the early ’70s, camping with my family. I bought my first 8R in when I started backpacking on my own. Still have that little stove and it still works great. In all that time I have done simple maintenance on it and it has never let me down.
The stove weighs about 28 oz. I like my hot food and drinks so I carry an extra 11 oz. These stoves work well at all altitudes, temperatures and inclement weather conditions. The highest I have used the stove is at 13, ft on Mt Rainier in Wa. I have used the stove at 10 degree temps and also in wet nasty weather.
It has never failed to light and deliver a hot meal. The stove works on a self pressurizing principle.
